Example 2: Square Meter Price to Price per Ton

In another case, your jumbo roll supplier offers you $1.15/m² for 60 gsm thermal paper.

  • Step 1: Input the price per square meter (1.15) and GSM (60) into the calculator.
  • Step 2: Click the button to get the result.
  • Result: The price per ton is $1,150, so one ton of thermal paper will cost $1,150.

How It Works?

Firstly, you need to understand the two basic concepts:

  1. GSM: or grammage, stands for grams per square meter. It indicates the weight of one square meter of paper in the paper industry. For example, 48gsm thermal paper means one square meter of thermal paper weighs 48 grams.
  2. 1 ton = 1,000,000 grams

Based on this, we can conclude:

  • How many square meters are contained in 1 ton = 1,000,000 ÷ GSM,
  • So, Price per m² = Price per Ton ÷ (1,000,000 ÷ GSM)

Conversely, from price per square meter to price per ton:

  • Price per Ton = Price per m² × (1,000,000 ÷ GSM)

With these formulas, the next time your supplier quotes you a price, you can easily convert it between per ton and per square meter yourself.

This is especially useful for professionals in printing, paper, and converting in the paper and packaging industry. It helps every party in the industry communicate clearly and avoid mistakes when comparing quotations and making calculations.
