Whether you’re labeling products, packages, or just organizing chaos, you’ll likely use the “silent hero” – labels, or self-adhesive labels.

Self-adhesive labels are a special composite material made up of three layers – think of it like a sandwich:

  • Face material: the outer “bread” where your branding or info is printed.
  • Pressure-sensitive adhesive: the “peanut butter” in the middle, always tacky and ready to stick.
  • Backing liner: the backing sheet coated in a release agent, also known as release liner. It is the “napkin” that keeps everything clean until you’re ready to peel and apply.

These layers are laminated together and then die-cut into specific shapes (like round, square, or oval). No water, no heat – just peel the labels and press with a finger, and it sticks.

Thermal labels print images using heat instead of ink or toner. There are two main types of thermal labels: direct thermal labels and thermal transfer labels.

Direct thermal labels, which use heat-sensitive paper and darken under the heat. You don’t have to worry about your ink, ribbon, or toner cartridges. Ideal for short-term uses like shipping labels and receipt printouts, they’re usually good for six months or so.

Thermal transfer labels are printed using a ribbon heated by a ribbon heater, and with the help of this ribbon, the image is transferred. It’s far more durable than direct thermal paper. 

Just smudge the labels with your fingernail to see if it’s a direct thermal label. You will see a black mark or line. If it doesn’t scratch off, it means it’s thermal transfer.

A4 labels – as the name suggests – come in the standard A4 size: 210mm x 297mm.

But unlike regular A4 paper, A4 labels are divided into multiple sticky labels. You can have 1, 4, 14, or even 27 labels per sheet ( we usually call it 1-up, 4-up, 14-up — the “up” just means how many labels per sheet), making them incredibly versatile. It’s like turning an ordinary sheet of paper into a team of mini helpers.

You can use A4 labels for everything, such as barcode labels, shipping labels, warehouse labels, product labels, etc. Since they can fit so many jobs, that is why they are also called “multi-purpose labels.”

Linerless labels are adhesive labels without a release liner or backing paper. Think of them like tape. You simply cut the portion you want to use and apply it directly to your surface. Linerless labels are made with an adhesive that allows them to unwind from a roll without leaving sticky adhesive residue on the layer beneath. These are not the same as regular labels which have a peel-off backing.

Just like A4 paper is the standard size in the office world, 4×6 thermal labels are the standard in the shipping world.

With a size of 4 inches by 6 inches (about 100mm x 150mm), these labels are the go-to choice for logistics, shipping, and e-commerce. You’ll find them on packages from Amazon, FedEx, UPS — basically any parcel on the move.

4×6 labels are available in both direct thermal and thermal transfer types. Either way, they require no ink, no toner, no mess. Just load them into the printer, and they’re ready to print shipping info — simple, fast, and efficient .

We use flexo printing and offset printing because both technologies excel for high-volume orders that require us to print in bulk without compromising the quality of the output. For the deliverables, it still depends on the clients’ requirements if they prefer one over the other.

With flexo printing, we use flexible relief plates that directly contact various substrates, making it more versatile for different materials, including paper, foil, labels, and boxes. This printing technology works best for fast-drying, solvent-based inks, often used in packaging materials.

Meanwhile, offset printing transfers ink from plates to rubber blankets before being applied to surfaces, which also prints extremely high-resolution images with precise color matching. This process works best for paper and cardstock.

Flexo printing is the most affordable, simpler to set up, and has the fastest printing speed.

There are a number of solutions available to preserve the quality, efficiency, and printer yield of your label products. If you want to keep them as good as new:

  • Make sure to keep them out of sunlight, as it may cause discoloration or fading.
  • Store them away from sources of heat that could cause the heat-sensitive coating to activate and from water, which can affect adhesive qualities.
  • Unless you’re moving the labels from one room to another, pick them up gently to avoid edge damage or uneven rolling.
  • Use labels within 365 days— these labels should be stored in a temperature-controlled warehouse to ensure quality—so that you can use the labels for up to 1 year after without issue.
