Self-Adhesive Labels: Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer

Panda Paper Roll’s label printing products mainly include direct thermal labels and thermal transfer labels. These labels can be used as scale labels, price labels, shipping labels, warehouse labels, and pharmacy labels in various sectors such as retail, logistics, healthcare, warehouse, and more.

  • Direct Thermal (DT) Labels: These labels require no ink ribbon, making them ideal for quick and easy printing. Perfect for shipping labels, weigh scale labels, and warehouse labels.
  • Thermal Transfer (TT) Labels: They use a ribbon to create crisp, sharp prints that withstand water, smudges, scratches, and grease. You can use them for harsh conditions for maximum durability and resistance.

FAQs About Label Products

Yes, direct thermal labels typically only print in black.

This printing technology uses heat-sensitive paper that turns black when exposed to heat from the printer’s thermal print head. While there are some colored direct thermal labels available, they are less common and usually limited in color options.

No, thermal transfer labels can print in multiple colors.

Unlike direct thermal printing, thermal transfer printing uses a ribbon to transfer ink onto the label material. By using different-colored ribbons, you can print thermal transfer labels in various colors, not just black.

We offer direct thermal label rolls in several core sizes to fit various printer needs:

  • 1 inch (25mm): This is the most popular size, used for compact desktop printers and handheld devices. It provides a good balance between label capacity and space efficiency for smaller printers. They are ideal for shipping labels, tickets, product labels, etc.
  • 1.5 inch (38mm): This size offers a larger core diameter than the 1-inch core, allowing for more labels per roll. It’s suitable for desktop printers and thermal scales that require a higher label capacity. They are ideal for weighing scale labels, price labels, barcode labels, etc.
  • 3 inches (76mm): This larger core size is typically used in industrial-grade printers that handle bulk label printing. It allows for significantly longer printing runs before the roll needs to be replaced.
  • Coreless labels: As the name indicates, coreless labels do not have a cardboard core in the center of the roll. This design can reduce waste and save space. Coreless labels are often used in portable printers and are suitable for various applications, including retail, logistics, and healthcare labeling.

Fanfold labels are a type of continuous thermal label designed for efficient use with thermal printers. Unlike roll labels, which are wound around a core, fanfold labels are stacked and folded in a zigzag pattern.

Here are some key features of fanfold labels:

  • Space-saving: They don’t require a core, making them more compact and easier to store compared to roll labels of similar capacity.
  • Feeding mechanism: They are fed through the back of the printer using a dedicated slot, and the printed labels exit at the front.
  • Applications: They are commonly used for high-volume printing jobs, such as generating shipping labels, product identification labels, and barcode labels.

Permanent labels and removable labels are two types of adhesive labels that serve different purposes based on their adhesive properties:

  • Permanent Labels: These labels are designed to adhere strongly to surfaces and are difficult to remove without leaving residue or damaging the surface. They are ideal for applications where long-term durability is required, such as product identification, asset tagging, and outdoor labeling.
  • Removable Labels: These labels have a less aggressive adhesive that allows them to be easily removed without leaving residue or causing damage. They are suitable for temporary labeling needs, such as price tags, temporary instructions, or promotional stickers.
  • The Main Differences: The majority of labels are made with permanent adhesive, as they tend to be more cost-effective than removable labels. However, removable labels offer a flexible labeling solution, albeit at a higher price point.

The storage conditions for label products are important to maintain their quality and adhesive properties. Here are some general guidelines:

  1. Temperature: Store labels in a cool, dry place, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Extreme temperatures can affect the adhesive properties and cause warping or curling of the labels.
  2. Humidity: Maintain relative humidity levels between 40% and 50% to prevent labels from curling or the adhesive from deteriorating.
  3. Light: Store labels in a cool, dry, and dark place. Direct sunlight and intense light exposure can cause fading or discoloration, especially for labels with vibrant colors.
  4. Original packaging: Whenever possible, store labels in their original packaging. This packaging is often designed to maintain optimal storage conditions and protect the labels from external factors.

Our company is equipped with five flexographic printing machines, allowing us to handle label printing projects with up to 8 colors.

This capability enables us to produce a wide range of vibrant and detailed labels for various applications, ensuring high-quality results that meet your specific requirements.

For label printing, we require vector source files in formats such as AI (Adobe Illustrator) or PDF. Vector files are preferred because they ensure the highest quality and scalability of your design without losing resolution.

If you don’t have a ready-to-use file, our in-house designers can work with you to create a suitable design for your labels.
