Paper Roll Weight Calculator (Method #2)
How to Use?
Example 1: 80mm x 80 meters Thermal Paper Roll
For the popular 80mm x 80 meters 48gsm thermal cash register roll, we can use method #1 and input the values below:
- Roll Width (W): 80 mm
- Roll Length (L): 80 m
- Paper GSM: 48 g/m²
So the weight of an 80mm × 80 meter 48gsm roll is about 307 grams, which is very close to its actual weight (excluding the core).
Example 2: 57mm x 40mm Thermal Paper Roll
For the other popular 57mm x 40mm 55gsm credit card paper roll, we can use method #2 and input the following:
- Roll Width (W): 57 mm
- Roll Diameter (D): 40 mm
- Core Diameter (C): 17 mm
- GSM: 55 g/m²
- Thickness: 62 μm
Why Do We Need to Know Paper Roll Weight?
Knowing the weight of one carton of paper rolls is particularly useful when you are planning container shipments in overseas importing or logistics arrangements in e-commerce businesses, since the weight data often determines freight costs and other related charges.
How It Works?
Step 1: Understand Paper GSM
GSM, or grammage, means grams per square meter of paper. It measures how heavy one square meter of paper is. For example, 55 GSM means that one square meter of paper (measuring 1m × 1m) weighs 55 grams. The higher the GSM, the heavier the paper.
Step 2: Calculate the Square Area of the Paper
A paper roll is essentially one long rectangular sheet wound on a core, so we can get the area of the paper sheet by multiplying its width by its unrolled length:

Let’s say, if your roll is 80mm wide and 60 meters long, the area is: 0.08 m × 60 m = 4.8 m².
Don’t know the length of the paper roll? No worries. Learn how to calculate paper roll length or use our free paper roll length calculator.
Step 3: Multiply by GSM
Now, we can multiply the area by the grammage to get the roll’s weight:
If GSM = 55, then: 4.8 m² × 55 g/m² = 264 g. That means the 80mm × 60m paper roll weighs about 264 grams (not counting the core).
So, The Formula to Calculate A Paper Roll’s Weight is:
where:
- Weight – total weight of the paper roll
- W – width of the paper roll
- L – length of the paper roll
- GSM – grams per square meter
