How to Use?

To get the thickness of a paper roll, the best way is to use a paper thickness gauge or a micrometer. But if you don’t have them in hand, you can use our calclautor to get the thickness quickly.

You can easily measure the outside diameters of the roll and the core tube in the paper roll with a ruler, and you can also measure the length of the paper roll by unwinding it or simply asking your supplier. Once you have these values, you can calculate the paper thickness.

Example #1

  • Roll Diameter: 40 mm
  • Core Outer Diameter: 17 mm
  • Length of the Roll: 16 m

Enter the values into our calculator: D = 40 mm, d = 17 mm, L = 16 m, and we get the output value 64.32 μm. This result matches the thickness of 55 gsm thermal paper (see table below).

Example #2

  • Roll Diameter: 80 mm
  • Core Outer Diameter: 17 mm
  • Length of the Roll: 60 m

Enter the values into our calculator: D = 80 mm, d = 17 mm, L = 60 m, we get the output value 79.95 μm, which matches the thickness of 60 gsm thermal paper (see table below).

Common Thermal Paper GSM and Thickness Chart

Here’s a chart of common thermal paper GSM and their corresponding thicknesses. Once you have the thickness value, you can easily find the matching GSM using this reference chart.

GSM (g/m2)Thickness (μm)
4852 – 55
5558 – 64
6075 – 83
6585 – 89
7090 – 95
7598 – 103

How It Works?

If you already know how to calculate the length of a paper roll and understand the logic behind it, then calculating the thickness of a paper is just one small step further.

In the formula, we use the following variables:

  • L = Paper roll length
  • D = Roll outer diameter
  • d = Core outer diameter
  • T = Paper thickness

Since we already know:

L = (D2 – d2) × 0.785 / T

After a simple rearrangement, we can get the formula to calculate the thickness:

T = (D2 – d2) × 0.785 / L

Note:

  1. The unit of paper thickness is μm (micron) as per ISO ISO 534:2011. One micron is equal to a thousandth of a millimeter (1 µm = 1/1000 mm or 1000 µm = 1 mm).
  2. Variations may occur in practical cases due to the stretching or softness of the material.
  3. This formula is applicable to any rolled materials, such as tape rolls, toilet paper rolls, or carpet rolls.
  4. The units of length can be inches, feet, meters, or millimeters. Use our inch to millimeters conversion tool for a quick conversion.
